Friday, June 29th
1154 W. Lunt #302
8pm-12am

Gene Tanta
Laura Goldstein
Connor Stratman
Emily Barton

It's the first installment of Absinthe and Zygote, a rhizomatic reading series. This one features four poets, a house party, and a lot of absinthe; the next one will be entirely different.  Curated by Anne Shaw and Toby Altman.

GENE TANTA was born in Timisoara, Romania and lived there until 1984, when his family immigrated to the United States. Since then, he has lived in DeKalb, Iowa City, New York, Oaxaca City, Iasi, Milwaukee, and Chicago. He is a poet, visual artist, and translator of contemporary Romanian poetry. His two poetry books are Unusual Woods (BlazeVOX 2010) and Pastoral Emergency. Tanta earned his MFA in Poetry from the Iowa's Writers' Workshop in 2000 and his PhD in English from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2009 with literary specialization in twentieth-century American poetry and the European avant-garde. His journal publications include: EPOCH, Ploughshares, Circumference Magazine, Exquisite Corpse, Watchword, Columbia Poetry Review, The Laurel Review, and Drunken Boat. Currently, he is editing two anthologies of poetry while teaching creative writing in Romania as a Fulbright Scholar.

LAURA GOLDSTEIN's poetry and essays can be found in American Letters and Commentary, MAKE, jacket2, EAOGH, Requited, Little Red Leaves, and How2. Her chapbook Let Her was released from Dancing Girl Press earlier this year, and her newest chapbook, Inventory, was just released by Sona Books at the beginning of June. She currently co-curates the Red Rover reading series with Jennifer Karmin and teaches Writing and Literature at Loyola University.

CONNOR STRATMAN lives in Chicago, Illinois, where he attends graduate school at Loyola University. His work has appeared in Counterexample Poetics, Pinstripe Fedora, Scythe, Etcetera, Outsider Writers, and Otoliths. His books and chapbooks include An Early Scratch (erbacce press, 2011), Some Were Awake (plumberries press, 2011) and Volcano (Writing Knights, 2011). He also edits the online poetry blog The Balloon.

EMILY BARTON is a graduate of the University of Michigan and an MFA candidate at NYU.

To get to the reading: take the Red Line to Morse, and walk a block east and a block North.  The apartment is just on the far side of Sheridan. There's a phone you can use to call (search for Toby).

September 7th-Poetry Pentathlon
all contestants must be registered by July 30th

Do you have what it takes to be a Poetry Champion!!

The Poetry Pentathlon is a live event held in Chicago. Poets compete in 5 separate events designed to test their writing and performing skill.

1:Form Poem-
Tanka consist of five units (often treated as separate lines when romanized or translated) usually with the following pattern of onji:
5-7-5-7-7.

2:Poetic Monologue-
Dramatic monologue in poetry, also known as a persona poem, shares many characteristics with a theatrical monologue: an audience is implied; there is no dialogue; and the poet speaks through an assumed voice—a character, a fictional identity, or a persona. Because a dramatic monologue is by definition one person’s speech, it is offered without overt analysis or commentary, placing emphasis on subjective qualities that are left to the audience to interpret.

3:Secret Word-
The Weirdos at Waiting 4 the Bus will provide each contestant with a word or phrase. Each contestant is to write a poem about the word or phrase without ever using the word or phrase in the body or title of the poem.

4:80's lyrics as poetry-
This is our performance event of the year. All contestants will choose a song form the 1980's and, using only the lyrics, perform it as poetry. Songs may be edited to fight off being repetitive and annoying the judges

5: On the spot prompt-
A writing prompt will be provided to every contestant upon their arrival at Studio A. All players will write a poem based on the prompt, during the course of the evening.

If you think you have the skills to compete, contact us at Weirdowatch1@gmail.com

The Next Objectivists & Ulysses

Thursday, June 14 (8 p.m.)

Mess Hall
6932 N. Glenwood Ave.
Chicago, IL  60626

free and open to the public

You are invited to attend a Next Objectivists meeting during which we will creatively explore James Joyce's Ulysses. We will read and discuss pieces of writing that have used Joyce's works as inspiration -- such as writings by John Cage. We will read and write through the "Eumaeus" episode of Ulysses

This will be the first of a two-part workshop dedicated to Joyce & a question that has been haunting us for a while, which we have conceptualized as "radical banality." When, where & how does an overcommitment to the banal, the humdrum, the petty & quaint, the everyday slog & habitual mechanizations of routine pass over into its opposite--extraordinary puncture? How do we & might we feel about projects such as Joyce's, which novelize in epic fashion quotidian banalities?

Participants will be invited to workshop poems that use passages from Ulysses as grist. Several strategies will be used during writing activities, such as an Oulipo method. Some pieces of writing generated during this Next Objectivists meeting will be made available to the publicby Bloomsday.

During the second workshop (on June 21), the Next Objectivists will continue to explore these questions by reading & writing our way through sections of Finnegans Wake (a word file of selections is attached). In both workshops, we will employ automatic writing, acrostics & other surrealist & oulipian techniques as keys to help us unlock these texts.

Join us! As always, the Next Objectivists' workshops are free and open to the public. All meetings are held at the Mess Hall.

Finally, the Next Objectivists' summer schedule is now available at www.nextobjectivists.blogspot.com.

This event is part of "Bloomsday 2012 & Ulysses' 90th."
