June 3: Luis Humberto Valadez & friends!


A Night of Poetry and Music for Chicago HOPES

Chicago HOPES Program Director Luis Humberto Valadez is holding an event to commemorate the release of his new poetry book/music and poetry project, "Valid Lush" being release by Plumberries Press! The event will also be a Chicago HOPES fundraiser, serving to help the organization grow and thrive in providing after-school and summer programs to children living in homeless shelters. 

The event will be held Sunday June 3rd at Beauty Bar Chicago (1444 W. Chicago Ave.) at 7pm. A $5 suggested donation at the door will go directly to Chicago HOPES. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of "Valid Lush" this evening will also be donated to Chicago HOPES. This is event is 21+ and is being presented by Curbside Splendor Publishing.

The event will feature a performance of poetry and music by Valadez and performances and readings from Quraysh Ali Lansana, Krista Franklin, Victor David Giron, Edwin R. Perry, and Cristina Correa.

May 20: The Human Micropoem @ NATO Rally

You are invited to participate in
THE HUMAN MICROPOEM

SUNDAY, MAY 20th
from 11am-12pm
at the corner of Jackson & Columbus
(on the sidewalk)

Bring one poem 5 minutes in length to be read aloud
or just come & be part of the chorus -- all welcome!

The Human Micropoem is a call and response choral form utilizing the human microphone at the occupy movements to amplify the speaker's words by those listening. The speaker says a line and then everyone who can hear repeats it.

This event is part of the March and Rally to Protest NATO
Join in a legal, permitted, family-friendly march and rally!  Starting at noon at Petrillo Bandshell, the Iraq Veteran's Against the War (IVAW) will be marching with us in solidarity. At the end of the march, within sight and sound of McCormick Place, members of IVAW will conduct the closing ceremony where they will return their medals to NATO. It will be a moving event, and not to be missed.

Archer Poetry part deux brings together some of the actionest poets of the near Midwest, crawling out from under their ivory towers to grace the basest defunct ballroom of South Archer Avenue. Come with your drinks, friends, children. If you're allergic to cats, beware. Please arrive by 7:30 to hear:

JAMIE KAZAY was born in Hollywood, CA. She writes poetry and often dabbles with one-act plays. She holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from California State University, Northridge and an MFA in Poetry from Columbia College, where she teaches writing. She also teaches poetry at East-West University. Her work has been published in Northridge Review, Columbia Poetry Review and Poetry Super Highway. She has a chapbook, Small Hollering (Dancing Girl Press, 2011).

DOLLY LEMKE lives in Chicago where she co-curates The Dollhouse Reading Series and works as Assistant Editor for Switchback Books. Her poems are published or forthcoming in Sink Review, Salt Hill, and Court Green.

ROWLAND SAIFI, the second cousin of an Arkansas state champion duck caller, is the author of the novella, Karner Blue Estates (Black Lodge Press, 2009). Having no idea how to call ducks himself, he has settled on working on a novel and teaching writing and literature at a few of places in Chicago, including Tribeca Flashpoint and School of the Art Institute.

MATIAS VIEGENER is an artist, author and critic who teaches at CalArts. He's a founder of the art collective Fallen Fruit, which has exhibited internationally in Mexico, Colombia, Denmark, Austria (Ars Electronica), LACMA, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and ARCO 2010 in Madrid. He writes regularly on art for X-tra, has published fiction, nonfiction and criticism in Cabinet, Journal of Aesthetics & Protest, Radical History Review, and Black Clock, and co-edited The Noulipian Analects and Séance in Experimental Writing. His book of experimental fiction, 2500 Random Things About Me, Too is just out from Les Figues Press.

RED ROVER SERIES is curated by Laura Goldstein and Jennifer Karmin. Each event is designed as a reading experiment with participation by local, national, and international writers, artists, and performers. The series was founded in 2005 by Amina Cain and Jennifer Karmin.

The author or editor of more than 30 books, including, most recently, Wharf Hypothesis, Ron Silliman is an influential contemporary poet and blogger whose work has been translated into a dozen languages. A recipient of the Levinson Prize from Poetry magazine, a Pew Fellowship, and two literary fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, he is a 2012 Kelly Writers House Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. He will read from poems that span his career. A reception will follow the reading.
