From Vanished Roads to Wild Roots: A Prairie Zen Journey Through Rockford

From Vanished Roads to Wild Roots: A Prairie Zen Journey Through Rockford

There is an old saying that books have a life of their own after they leave the writer's desk. Every now and then, a project grows into something larger than anyone expected.

That has been my experience with Vanished Roads.

What began as a collection of 104 haiku gradually became something rooted in the landscape and people of Rockford. The poems were written over years of walking northern Illinois—following Hall Creek through Severson Dells, listening to spring warblers, standing beneath old oaks after rain, and paying attention to the quiet moments that are easy to overlook.

Those places didn't simply provide scenery. They shaped the book.

Today, that connection has come full circle.

Rockford Art Deli: Supporting Local Art

One of the things that makes Rockford special is the willingness of local businesses to invest in local artists.

Rockford Art Deli has built a reputation for celebrating the city's creativity, and I'm grateful that Vanished Roads by Thomas L. Vaultonburg has found a home there. Even more meaningful, every copy purchased through RAD helps support Wild Roots Nature Center, turning a poetry collection into a small way of giving back to the landscapes that inspired it.

If you'd like to support both local literature and conservation efforts, you can find the book at Rockford Art Deli:

Or if you prefer to purchase directly from the publisher, Wolf Twin Books:

Wild Roots Nature Center

Many readers know Wild Roots Nature Center by its former name, Severson Dells Nature Center. Earlier this year the organization adopted its new name as it expanded its mission while continuing its long tradition of nature education and stewardship throughout the Rockford area.

That mission resonates deeply with me.

The trails, forests, prairie remnants, streams, birds, and changing seasons of northern Illinois have quietly become collaborators in my writing. Some of the poems in Vanished Roads were born while standing beside Hall Creek. Others came from long afternoons beneath migrating hawks, the first emergence of spring wildflowers, or simply watching light move through trees.

Nature rarely announces itself.

It rewards attention.

Wild Roots exists to help people cultivate exactly that kind of attention—connecting people with the places that surround them through education, stewardship, and exploration.

What I Mean by "Prairie Zen"

Over the past year I've begun using the phrase Prairie Zen to describe the perspective behind much of my writing.

Zen is often imagined through bamboo forests, mountain temples, and Japanese gardens.

The Midwest has its own language.

Here, awakening might arrive in a field of big bluestem. It might be carried by a sandhill crane, a red-winged blackbird, an abandoned gravel road, milkweed drifting across a fence line, or the sound of wind moving through prairie grass before a summer storm.

Prairie Zen isn't about escaping where we live.

It's about discovering that this place—our place—is already enough.

The Midwest doesn't imitate anyone else's landscape. It has its own beauty, its own silence, and its own wisdom waiting for anyone willing to slow down and notice.

Community Matters

Independent bookstores, local publishers, artists, conservation organizations, and neighborhood businesses all contribute something unique to a city's identity.

When they work together, something larger begins to emerge.

A book supports a local business.

That business supports a nature center.

The nature center protects the landscapes that inspire future artists.

The circle continues.

An Invitation

If you find yourself in downtown Rockford, stop into Rockford Art Deli and browse.

If you've never visited Wild Roots Nature Center, spend an afternoon wandering the trails. Listen more than you speak. Watch the birds. Stand beside Hall Creek for a while.

You may leave with nothing more than muddy shoes.

Or you may discover what I've spent years trying to capture in seventeen syllables.

Sometimes the longest journeys begin by simply paying attention.

Vanished Roads, Wolf Twin Books, and the Return of Zombie Logic Press

After many years of dormancy, Zombie Logic Press has begun stirring again.

For readers who remember the small press poetry scene of the 1990s and 2000s, Zombie Logic Press was once one of those stubborn little independent ventures that existed because poetry needed places to happen. It published books, chapbooks, journals, strange projects, local voices, and work that did not always fit neatly into the available boxes.

Now, as part of a broader return to publishing, writing, and small-press work, Zombie Logic Press is being revived as an archive, a literary presence, and a companion project to Wolf Twin Books, the independent press I co-founded with artist Tré.

That revival begins in earnest with the release of my new haiku collection, Vanished Roads.

Published by Wolf Twin Books, Vanished Roads gathers 104 haiku written during a period of personal upheaval, pandemic isolation, illness, grief, study, and renewal. What began as a daily practice gradually became a book about learning to continue when the old roads disappear.

The collection is also a collaboration. Tré designed the cover and created eight original interior illustrations for the book, giving Vanished Roads a visual world that deepens its movement through loss, nature, impermanence, and attention.

Vanished roads By Thomas L. Vaultonburg

In recent years, my haiku have appeared in journals including The Heron’s Nest, Modern Haiku, Presence, Acorn, and Mayfly. But Vanished Roads feels less like a résumé item than a record of survival, practice, and arrival. It is not a book about finding the way back. It is about discovering what remains when the way back no longer exists.

The return of Zombie Logic Press and the growth of Wolf Twin Books are connected by the same impulse: to make room for poetry, art, collaboration, and books that might otherwise vanish into the noise.

Vanished Roads is available now from Wolf Twin Books:

W4tB: Weirdo Open Mic: featuring Al DeGenova

Monday, November 20 at 7 PM - 9 PM

UNCHARTED BOOKS
2620 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647-1610, United States

It is the birthday of legendary guerrilla poet Lesley Heath Morrow. In honor of the occasion W4tB will forgo its usual format in favor of the POETRY WHEEL.
THE POETRY WHEEL is a poetic round robin in which each poet tries to connect their poem to the proceeding poem. connections can be complicated or simple, but all connections need to be explained.

that poem contains the word blue and this one is about the blues
that poem has a particular form and so does this one
that poem was about love or death, or anger or politics, or drunken yadda yadda.
all these connections are valid
donations to pay the feature performer will considered a lovely gesture

Lesley Heath Morrow was a Scottish Expatriate who arrived in the USA sometime in 1958. He spent most of his time in Greenwich Village, although there are reports of him traveling to both Chicago and Los Angeles. Rumors of his affairs with Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon have been vaguely immortalized in song. It was the release of "you're so Vain" in 1971 that led to his disappearance. There is documentation that claim he boarded a plane for South America, but never actually arrived in Brazil.
One of the tricks to fully understanding the works of Lesley Heath Morrow is to put yourself into his shoes. You are suddenly in a country that believes your name has some mysterious sexual ambiguity. This particular conception may explain Morrow's hatred for David Bowie and his cross dressing tendencies. The name Lesley bears no such stigma in Scotland.
Far more important than the name is the mysterious background of the man. He has left his Native Scotland after some unknown personal tragedy that is only ever hinted at. All references says it points to a women and her death or joining a convent. Morrow rarely spoke of it.
He spent most of his time denying his connections to wealth and aristocracy and pointing out the tragedies and idiocies of an American generation that devoted itself to self-absorbed trends like free love and sexual experimentation that were akin to the deviancy that brought down the Roman Empire.
Morrow spent his time in America hanging out in Greenwich Village and absorbing the folk music scene. He enjoyed the political angst and personal introspection of Bob Dylan and Tim Buckley. Morrow's dislike of the pretentious Andy Warhol led to a long time feud with Lou Reed and a legal debate over who really wrote "White Light, White Heat.
LHM was a guerrilla poet, preferring to leave his work on diner tables and bathroom walls. He wrote on receipts and napkins. He often slipped them into the pockets of whomever the poem was written about.
LHM's best friend was a Blues Harp Player named Slidefish Williams. The pair met in Chicago in the late 1950s. Morrow was last in Chicago during the DNC in 1968. It coincided with  the funeral of Slidefish who died of lung cancer.

Rockford Outsider Poet Publishes Second Children's Book

Rockford based publisher, Zombie Logic Press, is proud to announce the release of its seventh book “Atrocious Poems A to Z.” This is the second children's book by Rockford creative team and real life couple Thomas L. Vaultonburg of Zombie Logic Press and Jenny Mathews of Rockford Illustrating. Atrocious Poems A To Z is a book about all the things kids love to hate. Vegetables, inoculations, haircuts, monsters under the bed, sharing etc. Twenty-six different amusing poems and illustrations designed to help children cope with these anxiety-producing moments of childhood. Many of the poems also contain lessons in literary form, theme, and literary devices such as oxymoron, paradox, onomatopoeia, and verbal irony.

For Vaultonburg, the project is the culmination of a class project that began at Mary Morgan Grade School almost forty years ago when his 5th grade class was tasked with writing and illustrating a children's book all by themselves. When his lack of effort was chided by the teacher Vaultonburg took it to heart three decades later when he vowed to finish the book he had put such a half-hearted effort into, and after eight years of work, and lots of encouragement from the illustrator, Jenny Mathews, has written a book that will be on the walls of the Rockford Art Museum starting June 9th.

Limited editions of Atrocious Poems A to Z are available for pre-order through ZombieLogicPress.com and will make its debut June 9th 2017 at the Rockford Art Museum. Atrocious Poems A to Z's original pages will be included in an exhibition this summer at the Rockford Art Museum called Bittersweet Observations. “We are very honored to be part of this show at one of our hometown's most prestigious and integral institutions,” says Vaultonburg “It's a wonderful opportunity to teach kids about literary devices in a fun way.” The illustrations from the book can be seen at Rockford Art Museum from June 9th to October 1st.

The book is the fourth in the Rock River Literary Series, publishing authors exclusively from Rockford, Illinois, and the Rock River Valley area. A Kickstarter campaign has been established to raise funds for the project, and future projects in the series at Kickstarter

Rockford Resident Publishes First Book of Outlaw Poetry

Rockford poet Dennis Gulling, a thirty year veteran of the small press scene, and editor of crawlspace from 1980-1989, has had his first full-length book of poetry, The Blood Dark Sea, published by Zombie Logic Press in Rockford.

The book is 100 pages of what can best be described as noir poetry. Each short poem is a vignette best suited to a 1930's style noir movie, complete with a menagerie of characters engaging in mayhem, small time turpitude, and a gamut of despicable behavior one might expect to see on the police blotter, or an episode of Cops. And the subject matter seems completely organic and appropriate, coming from Rockford, the FBI's 3rd most dangerous city in America. These are characters down on their luck, experiencing epic "bad days," or just making bad decisions. The reader becomes the beneficiary of all this carnage, as the German concept of schadenfreude is in full force in these tiny cautionary tales.

However, the attitude of the poet is not one of judgement or even a prurient interest in shocking the reader with the morbid details. These poems are delivered even-handedly, with no condescension or judgement, and with a wry humor that finishes each scenarios as quickly and unexpectedly as a prison shivving. Gulling's thirty years spent honing his craft are in full evidence here in this collection that spans his decades of writing. Here's a sample of Gulling's dry, humorous take on small time debauchery and depravity...

GIRL ON THE HOOD OF A CAMARO

He saw her in the parking lot
When he was going
Into Carmen’s Liquors
She was sitting
On the hood of a black ‘69 Camaro
White leather skirt
Up to her hips
Yellow blouse cut low
She couldn’t have been
More than 17
She was blowing bubble gum
And combing her bright blond hair
Staring at nothing
He watched
For almost a minute
Then went in to do the job
Pulled a .22 on the clerk
And told her to open the register
The clerk came up with a gun of her own
So fast he didn’t know what happened
She put a bullet point blank
In his chest
And he went down
In front of a rotating wine cooler display
People started peeking in through the windows
But keeping low
When they saw the clerk standing
Over the body
They came in for a closer look
Pretty soon there was a crowd
Around the front of the store
And the police started pouring in

But the girl still sat
On the hood of the Camaro blowing bubbles
Still staring at nothing
In the red glow
Of the police lights
It looked like she was
Combing blood from her hair
