Beat poets took on 1950s mainstream America and brought it, kicking and screaming, into the 1960s. Marilyn Campbell’s adaptation of The Beats is directed by Ann Filmer. The play focuses on such writers as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Diane di Prima. A cast of five young actors digs into the words, ideas, culture, and lifestyle of the Beats, asking: Are we progressing? Regressing? And do we still have a love affair with the road?
