R. ERICA DOYLE is the author of proxy (Belladonna* Books, 2013). Her work has appeared in Best American Poetry, Our Caribbean: A Gathering of Gay and Lesbian Writing from the Antilles, and Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam, among others.

RONALDO WILSON, PhD, is the author of Farther Traveler: Poetry, Prose, Other (Counterpath Press, forthcoming), Lucy 72 (1913 Press, forthcoming), Narrative of the Life of the Brown Boy and the White Man (University of Pittsburgh, 2008), and Poems of the Black Object (Futurepoem Books, 2009), and is co-founder of the Black Took Collective.

Mary Ruefle & Jenny Boully Reading

MARY RUEFLE's latest book is Trances of the Blast (Wave Books, 2013). Her collection of essays on poetry, Madness, Rack, and Honey, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; her Selected Poems won the 2011 William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America. In addition to poetry, she has published a book of prose, The Most of It (Wave Books, 2008), and a book of erasure, A Little White Shadow (Wave Books, 2006).

JENNY BOULLY is the author of five books, most recently of the mismatched teacups, of the single-serving spoon: a book of failures (Coconut Books, 2013). Her other books include not merely because of the unknown that was stalking toward them (Tarpaulin Sky Press, 2011), The Book of Beginnings and Endings (Sarabande Books, 2007), [one love affair]* (Tarpaulin Sky Press, 2006), and The Body: An Essay (Essay Press, 2007). 

Court Green Reading & Release

CHAD SWEENEY is the author of four books of poetry, most recently Parable of Hide and Seek (Alice James Books, 2010) and Wolf’s Milk: Lost Notebooks of Juan Sweeney (Forklift Books, bilingual Spanish/English, 2012), and two books of translation, The Art of Stepping Through Time: Selected Poems of H.E. Sayeh (White Pine Books, 2011, with Mojdeh Marashi) and Pablo Neruda’s The Call to Destroy Nixon (Marick Press, forthcoming).

PETER DAVIS is the author of three books of poetry, Hitler's Mustache (Barnwood Press, 2006), Poetry! Poetry! Poetry! (Bloof Books, 2010) and TINA (Bloof Books, 2013). His poems have appeared in the Best American Poetry series as well as many journals like Court Green, Jacket, and La Petite Zine.

Shanna Compton & Nick Twemlow Poetry Reading

Columbia College Chicago features Shanna Compton & Nick Twemlow as part of the Fall 2013 Poetry Reading Series, sponsored by the Department of Creative Writing. The event is free and open to the public.

NICK TWEMLOW's first book of poems, Palm Trees, won the Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America. He is a senior editor at The Iowa review and co-edits Canarium Books. He is also a filmmakers, and his short works have played Tribeca, SXSW, Slamdance, Athens, and many other film festivals. He is an assistant professor at Coe College.  

SHANNA COMPTON's books include Brink (2012), For Girls & Others (2007), Down Spooky (2005) and several chapbooks. A Book-length speculative poem called The Seam is forthcoming next year. Her poems and essays have been published by The Best American Poetry series, the Poetry Foundation website, Poetry Daily, Verse Daily, and the Academy of American Poets Poem-a-Day feature, among others.

KATE GREENSTREET is the author of Young Tambling (2013), The Last 4 Things (2009), and case sensitive (2006), all from Ahsahta Press. Her poetry can be found in Chicago Review, Boston Review, Colorado Review, and other journals. 

RICHARD MEIER is the author of three books of poetry, the most recent being In the Pure Block of the Whole Imaginary (Omnidawn, 2012). Previous books Terrain Vague and Shelley Gave Jane a Guitar were published by Verse Press and Waves Books, respectively. He is writer-in-residence at Carthage College and lives in Madison and Chicago.

NICOLE WILSON is the author of the chapbook Amazing Face (Phantom Limb Press) and the forthcoming collection Supper & Repair Kit (The Lettered Streets Press). A graduate of the MFA Poetry Program at Columbia College Chicago, she lives and teaches in Ohio.

TONY TRIGILIO's most recent books are White Noise (Apostrophe Books, 2013) and Historic Diary (BlazeVOX Books, 2011). He is the editor of Elise Cowen: Poems and Fragments, forthcoming in 2014 from Ahsahta Press, and co-editor of Visions and Divisions: American Immigration Literature, 1870-1930 (Rutgers University Press, 2008). He also is the author of two books of criticism, Allen Ginsberg's Buddhist Poetics (Southern Illinois University Press, 2007) and "Strange Prophecies Anew" (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2000). He directs the program in Creative Writing/Poetry at Columbia College Chicago and co-edits Court Green.

DAVID TRINIDAD's most recent books are Dear Prudence: New and Selected Poems (2011) and Peyton Place: A Haiku Soap Opera (2013), both published by Turtle Point Press. His other books include The Late Show (2007), By Myself (with D.A. Powell, 2009), and Plasticville (2000). He is also the editor of A Fast Life: The Collected Poems of Tim Dlugos (Nightboat Books, 2011).

Carmen Giménez Smith Reading

As part of the Fall 2013 Reading Series, the Department of Creative Writing at Columbia College Chicago will feature Carmen Giménez Smith reading both poetry and nonfiction.

CARMEN GIMÉNEZ SMITH is the author of a memoir, Bring Down the Little Birds, and four poetry collections— Milk and Filth, Goodbye, Flicker, The City She Was, and Odalisque in Pieces. She is the recipient of a 2011 American Book Award, the 2011 Juniper Prize for Poetry, and a 2011-2012 fellowship in creative nonfiction from the Howard Foundation. Formerly a Teaching-Writing Fellow at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, she teaches in the creative writing program at New Mexico State University, while serving as the editor-in-chief of the literary journal Puerto del Sol and the publisher of Noemi Press.

Sandra Simonds & Joe Harrington Reading - February 13

Columbia College Chicago's Spring 2013 reading series opens with guests Sandra Simonds and Joe Harrington, sponsored by the Department of English.

SANDRA SIMONDS grew up in Los Angeles, California. She earned a BA in Psychology and Creative Writing at UCLA and an MFA from the University of Montana, where she received a poetry fellowship. In 2010, she earned a PhD in Literature from Florida State University. Her second book of poems, Mother was a Tragic Girl, was published by Cleveland State University Poetry Center in 2012. She is also the author of Warsaw Bikini (Bloof Books, 2008), which was a finalist for numerous prizes including the National Poetry Series; she is also the author of several chapbooks including Used White Wife (Grey Book Press, 2009) and The Humble Travelogues of Mr. Ian Worthington, Written from Land & Sea (Cy Gist, 2006). Her poems have been published in many journals including Poetry, The American Poetry Review, Gulf Coast, The Believer, Colorado Review, Fence, Columbia Poetry Review, Barrow Street, Volt, New Orleans Review and Lana Turner. Her creative nonfiction has been published in Post Road and other literary journals. She currently lives in Tallahassee, Florida, and is an Assistant Professor of English at Thomas University in Thomasville, Georgia.

JOE HARRINGTON, is the author of Things Come On (an amneoir) (Wesleyan Univ. Press 2011), a mixed-genre work relating the twinned narratives of the Watergate scandal and his mother's cancer; it was a Rumpus magazine Poetry Book Club selection. He is the author of the chapbook Earth Day Suite (Beard of Bees 2010) and the critical work Poetry and the Public (Wesleyan 2002). His creative work also has appeared in Hotel Amerika, No Tell Motel, 1913, BathHouse, Otoliths, Fact-Simile, and Tarpaulin Sky, among others. He teaches at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
